I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt

of your letter of May 27th 1881 and to request that

you will express to Lord Kimberley my grateful thanks for the

leave on full pay which he has been pleased to

grant to me, and also for his kindness in holding me eligible for some other appointment in the Colonial Service.

I beg leave to assure his Lordship that although I cannot hold myself blameless, the circumstances under

which I was brought to act as

I did, were such that I trust his Lordship will pardon me for thinking

that no gentleman with a becoming sense of honor and self respect

could have remained passive; but whatever and wherever

the blame may lie,

I beg to assure his Lordship the event has

in every way been most distressing to me, and that in case

his Lordship should be pleased some time to appoint me to some

other post to which my qualifications

are adapted, which

may speedily happen, the duties of the office shall be discharged by me with the strictest fidelity and regard to the public service.

I have the honor to be,

Your most obedient Servant,

E. H. Meade

Assistant Under Secretary
